HELP & GUIDES

A little guidance goes a long way.

Set up your vault, keep a backup, and find your way back when you need help.

01 · GETTING STARTED

Make the vault your own.

Create your vault

Open Pass & Note on your phone and follow the setup flow to create and confirm a strong Master Password. Keep it somewhere safe: there is no server-side reset that can decrypt your vault.

Add a password

Open Passwords in the mobile app and choose the add control. Enter the account name, credentials, and password, then save the record to your vault.

Add a secure note

Open Notes, create a note, and enter your private information. Note editors autosave changes. Keep a current encrypted export for recovery.

Use the password generator

Generate a strong password locally and copy it into the account you are securing. The website generator offers 16, 32, or 64 characters and does not save generated passwords.

Open the password generator →

Enable biometrics

Unlock your vault with your Master Password, open the mobile security settings, and enable biometric quick unlock. Complete the device’s biometric prompt. Availability depends on the supported biometrics configured on your device.

02 · VAULT MANAGEMENT

Stay in control of access.

Lock your vault

Use the app’s Lock control when you finish. The database session closes and the app returns to its locked screen.

Change your Master Password

In the mobile security settings, choose the password change option and confirm the current and new Master Passwords. The app protects the existing vault key with your new password. Older exports still need their original password.

Set automatic lock

Choose an auto-lock duration in the mobile security settings. A privacy shield hides sensitive screens when the app becomes inactive. The selected interval determines when authentication is required after time in the background.

Configure clipboard protection

Choose a copied-password clearing duration in the mobile security settings, or use the background-clearing option. These mobile controls do not apply to passwords copied from the browser Recovery Viewer.

03 · BACKUPS

Give yourself a way back.

Save encrypted exports somewhere you can reach if your phone is unavailable.

.pnvault

Complete encrypted vault: passwords and secure notes together.

.pnpass

An encrypted package of supported password records.

.pnnote

An encrypted package of supported secure notes.

Create a .pnvault backup
  1. Unlock Pass & Note on your phone.
  2. Open Vault and choose Export Vault .
  3. Confirm your Master Password.
  4. Choose a safe location in the device’s file picker and save the export.

For a section package, use Export in Passwords or Notes. Each export receives its own encryption before it is saved outside the app.

Store a backup safely

Keep a current encrypted copy somewhere accessible independently of your phone. Retain the Master Password used for that export. If you use cloud storage, its file handling is governed by that provider.

File metadata such as the export type, date, and item count is readable; record contents are encrypted. A backup does not contain a recoverable copy of your password.

Restore from an encrypted backup

Use the mobile app’s import or restore flow for the type of export you have. Select the compatible Pass & Note file, enter the password used when it was exported, and review the app’s confirmation before proceeding.

A full vault restore and a section import can have different effects on existing records. Read the confirmation shown by your installed app before completing the operation.

Use the Recovery Viewer
  1. Open the Recovery Viewer on a trusted browser.
  2. Choose a .pnvault, .pnpass, or .pnnote export.
  3. Enter the Master Password used to create that export.
  4. Read the recovered passwords or notes.
  5. Choose Close File when finished and clear any copied passwords from your clipboard.

04 · TROUBLESHOOTING

When something needs a second look.

I forgot my Master Password

Pass & Note cannot recover or reset a Master Password to decrypt your vault. An existing backup still requires the password used for that export. Biometric quick unlock does not reveal your Master Password. Avoid deleting or resetting the app while you assess your recovery options.

Biometric unlock stopped working

Use your Master Password to unlock. Enrollment changes, device security changes, or biometric lockout can make quick unlock unavailable. After unlocking, check your device’s biometric settings and enable quick unlock again in the app.

My file will not import or open

Check that it is a Pass & Note encrypted export and that its extension matches its content. Use the password from the time of export, which may differ from your current password. Do not rename a ZIP or database file to a Pass & Note extension. The browser viewer accepts files up to 25 MB.

My export did not save

Confirm the Master Password, check that your selected storage location has space and is available, and try exporting again. Verify that the saved file exists before relying on it as your backup.

The browser viewer locked or cleared my file

Privacy Lock activates when the tab goes into the background. Enter the backup password again to resume. If the inactivity timer cleared the session, select the encrypted file again. The original file on your device is unchanged.
